Mausinram of Meghalaya, India’s hottest place, record rain

As monsoon rains are wreaking havoc and killing people in the northeast region, Mausinram in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district and Sohra are in the race to become the hottest places in the country, India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said. Situated on opposite cliffs, whose valleys face the Bangladesh plains, Sohra (formerly Cherrapunji) recorded 972 mm of heavy rainfall in the 24 hours ended 8:30 am today, while Mausinram, on the other hand, recorded 1,03.6 mm. mm of rain fell. In the same period, the highest rainfall for a day, IMD officials said.

Sohra’s June 17 record is the third highest rainfall recorded since June 16, 1995 – at 1,563.3 mm.

The highest rainfall was recorded for Mausinram on June 7, 1966 with 945.4 mm and during that year, the city received a record 4 days of rainfall – above 700 mm in 24 hours.

According to IMD officials, the city of Sohra has also received a total of 2457.2 mm of rain in the last three days, which is more than Mumbai and Delhi have received in three years.
