May affect our travel to India for ICC events, says PCB on Jay Shah’s decision to ‘neutral venue’

New Delhi: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah’s recent remarks that the Asia Cup 2023 – which will be hosted by Pakistan – will be played at a neutral venue, has not gone down well with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The PCB on Wednesday wrote to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) asking it to convene an emergency meeting on this “important and sensitive manner” at the earliest. Incidentally, Jay Shah is the chairman of the ACC.

The neighboring board has said that Shah’s comments were made “without any discussion or consultation” with the ACC and PCB, which is the host of the 2023 event. It said the comments were made “without any consideration of the long-term consequences and implications”.

The PCB said that such a unilateral decision could affect Pakistan’s visit to India for the ICC One Day International World Cup in 2023 and all ICC events to be held in India between 2024 and 2031.

Jay Shah said after the BCCI Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday Told: “We will have the Asia Cup 2023 at a neutral venue. It is the government which decides on the permission of our team to go to Pakistan… so we will not comment on that… but for the 2023 Asia Cup, it is decided that the tournament will be held at a neutral venue.

Shah said: “I am saying this as ACC president. We (India) cannot go there (Pakistan), they cannot come here. In the past also the Asia Cup has been played at a neutral venue.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Shah was present in the presence of the new BCCI office-bearers – President Roger Binny, Treasurer Ashish Shelar and Rajeev Shukla, who was re-elected as the Board’s vice-president.

In an official statement issued on Wednesday, the PCB said: “The PCB has seen with surprise and dismay the comments made by ACC President Mr. Jay Shah yesterday regarding the shifting of next year’s Asia Cup to a neutral venue. Asian Cricket Council or without any discussion or consultation with the Board of the Pakistan Cricket Board (Event Host) and without any consideration of their long-term consequences and implications.

“After presiding over the ACC meeting, during which Pakistan was awarded the ACC Asia Cup with overwhelming support and response from ACC Board members, Mr Shah’s statement of moving the ACC Asia Cup was clearly one-sided. Is.”

It said: “This is contrary to the philosophy and spirit for which the Asian Cricket Council was formed in September 1983 – a united Asian cricket body to protect the interests of its members and to organize, develop and develop the game of cricket. To do and promote. in Asia.

“The overall impact of such statements has the potential to divide the Asian and international cricket communities, and could affect Pakistan’s visit to India for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and future ICC events in India in the 2024-2031 cycle. “
