Former MP and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader K. Maya Thevar passed away on Tuesday afternoon at her residence in Chinnalpatti near Dindigul due to age-related illness. He was 87 years old.

The first AIADMK MP, Shri Maya Thevar was born on October 15, 1934 at T. Uchapatti near Usilampatti in Madurai district. After completing his schooling at St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai, he pursued his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Pachaiyappa College, Chennai.

He further studied law at Madras Law College (now Dr. Ambedkar Law College) and earned his MABL degree. He was a prominent lawyer practicing in the Madras High Court, whose interest in politics earned him a seat with the party.

It is to be noted that when former Chief Minister and AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran started the AIADMK party, Mr. Maya Thevar registered the party’s first victory by contesting the ‘two leaves’ symbol during the 1973 Dindigul Lok Sabha constituency by-election. Of. ,

Also, it was Mr. Maya Thevar who chose the iconic ‘two leaves’ symbol while contesting on behalf of the party and his victory marked AIADMK’s grand entry into electoral politics.

Later, he left AIADMK and joined DMK, on ​​whose behalf he contested and was re-elected as MP from Dindigul constituency in 1980. He is not actively involved in politics since last 15 years.

AIADMK interim general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami condoled the death of the senior politician and in his condolence message recalled his electoral victory in 1973. Deposed AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam also offered condolences to the family.

The senior politician is survived by his wife M. Saraswathi and daughter KM Sumati and son KM Senthilkumaran. His last rites will be performed on Wednesday at his residence in Chinnalpatti.
