BSP chief Mayawati on Friday attacked the Samajwadi Party, saying it should not “insult” the marginalized sections of the society by calling them “Shudra”.

Ms. Mayawati’s remarks came a day after senior Samajwadi Party leader and national general secretary Swami Prasad Maurya said that only women and Shudras felt the pain of “derogatory” comments made against them in the guise of religion. can do.

In a series of tweets in Hindi, Mayawati said, “Ramcharitmanas and Manusmriti are not books of the weak and marginalized section of the society, but it is the Constitution of India, in which Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar called them Shudras, not Shudras. SC, STs and OBCs, therefore, the Samajwadi Party should not insult them by calling them Shudras, nor should they defy the Constitution.

Ms. Mayawati said, “In the matter of neglect (‘upeksha’) and tirskar (‘tirskar’) of great saints, gurus and eminent personalities, parties like the Congress, the BJP and the Samajwadi Party are second to none.”

The BSP chief also said that it is well known that the self-respect of SC, ST, OBC, Muslim and religious minorities is always safe in BSP. He alleged that other parties are trying to get their votes by playing various kinds of dramas.

Mr Maurya, a prominent OBC leader from Uttar Pradesh, recently hit headlines for his comments on the Ramcharitmanas, saying some of its verses “insult” a large section of society on the basis of caste and demanded that They should be “banned”.

He compared the pain of women and Shudras to that of Mahatma Gandhi when he was thrown off the train by the British.

A cabinet minister in the previous BJP government in the state, Mr Maurya had resigned and joined the SP ahead of the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

He contested from Fazilnagar assembly seat in Kushinagar district but lost. Later, he was sent to the Legislative Council by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Police said that on January 24, an FIR was lodged against Maurya at the Hazratganj police station for his controversial remarks on Ramcharitmanas.

On January 29, another FIR was registered against Maurya and others at the PGI police station.
