Security has been beefed up outside the LG’s residence, with police personnel deployed in large numbers at the spot and barricades erected around the area.

The AAP on Saturday staged a protest outside the Lieutenant Governor’s residence here after 10 aldermen nominated by him were sworn in before elected representatives at the MCD House, alleging that they were “destroying” the Constitution.

The ruling party claimed that this was part of a “covert ploy” to vote for aldermen in the mayoral and deputy mayoral elections.

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Tuesday nominated 10 aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), days ahead of the mayoral elections to be held on January 6.

The AAP had alleged that all the nominated members were BJP workers and the civic body had sent their names directly to Saxena without informing the city government.

On Saturday, AAP leaders and workers gathered outside Raj Niwas in Civil Lines with banners and raised slogans against Saxena.

Senior AAP leader Atishi, who was part of the protest, alleged that the LG was “destroying” the Constitution and going against the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act.

Why were 10 aldermen nominated bypassing the Delhi government? Why was the senior most person not made the presiding officer? Why were they trying to give aldermen the right to vote? LG needs to answer these questions as he is destroying the Constitution.”

Aldermen refers to people who are experts in their field. However, they do not have the right to vote in the mayoral election.

Security was tightened outside the Lt Governor’s residence, with a large number of police personnel deployed at the spot and barricades erected around the area.

On Friday, the first meeting of the MCD House was adjourned without electing mayor and deputy mayor as BJP and AAP councilors exchanged heated words and presiding officer Satya Sharma was sworn in first to aldermen and not elected representatives To.

The AAP alleged that the BJP first administered oath to the elderly people to give them the right to vote in the election of mayor and deputy mayor.

The next date of election will be announced later.
