A 20-year-old NEET aspirant from Bihar attempted self-immolation here under the pressure of studies, police said on Thursday.

Mayank Kumar set himself ablaze in his Paying Guest (PG) room in Talwandi area of Jawahar Nagar police station area on Wednesday afternoon, they said.

He told that this young candidate, a resident of Bihar’s West Champaran, was doing self-study for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in Kota for the last two months.

They said the NEET aspirant allegedly took the extreme step after his father repeatedly asked him to concentrate on his studies.

Dr Neeraj Devanda of MBS Hospital (Burn Unit) said that Mayank, who has at least 60 per cent burns on his upper body and face, was brought to the hospital by a PG caretaker.

He said that he was later referred to the Higher Medical Health Center for better treatment on Thursday morning.

Police said the caretaker narrated the incident to Mayank’s father, who after meeting him was on his way back to Bihar and allegedly took him to Bihar for further treatment.

NEET aspirant’s father Sanjay Kumar said, “I was at Kota railway station to catch a train to Bihar when the caretaker called and informed about the accident.”

He further told that Mayank has come to study in Kota, but he did not take admission in any coaching institute here and was doing self-study.

According to Sanjay, during a conversation with his son on Wednesday morning, he asked him to focus on his studies and goals.

The father said that everything was normal and they had lunch together.

At least 15 students committed suicide in 2022 in Kota, which is a hub of coaching centers preparing students for engineering and medical entrance exams.

The recent suicides of three students preparing for competitive exams here have sparked a fresh debate on the factors that motivate students to take the extreme step.

According to experts, every year lakhs of students come to Kota with dreams of getting into some of the most prestigious colleges in the country, but many soon find themselves bogged down by hectic routines, peer pressure and expectations.
