Medical student jumped from college building in Meerut, admitted to ICU

A Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student allegedly tried to commit suicide on Wednesday evening by jumping off the fourth floor of Meerut’s Subharti Medical College. The girl, who was injured due to severe spinal cord injury, has been admitted to the college hospital.

The 20-year-old is a BDS second year student at Subharti Medical College on Meerut Bypass Road, a constituent college of Swami Vivekananda Subharti University. According to police, the BDS second year student, a resident of Meerut, was sitting in the library in the afternoon and talking on her phone before jumping off the college building.

A police officer said that the student is currently in the ICU. The police have scanned the call records of the girl as it is believed that she had a verbal argument with another person over the phone. According to reports, she had gone to the fourth floor of the building with the intention of taking a selfie, but instead she stood on a railing and jumped. A video of this incident has been shared by a Twitter handle Khabar Watch and on the post Meerut Police said that legal action is being taken.

“Our priority is to save the life of the student. Also, a committee has been constituted by the college to investigate the matter. Subharti Medical College PRO Anam Shermani has also coordinated with the police in her investigation.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) Keshav Kumar said that a youth has been questioned in this regard and investigation is on to understand what exactly happened. The UP Police has also seized the CCTV footage capturing the incident from the college authorities for further investigation.
