Mahto’s father is a farmer while his mother is a housewife.

Amir Mahato who completed her nursing training in Sambalpur village was among the 365 candidates appointed under the National Health Mission.

Jharkhand government has appointed a transgender from West Singhbum district as a community health officer in the state. Initially, aspired to become a nurse as per her mother’s wish but failed due to financial constraints has now become the first transgender community health officer of Jharkhand. Her name is Amir Mahto. Chief Minister Hemant Soren handed over the appointment letter to Amir Mahato on Thursday, August 29.

Amir Mahto who completed her nursing training in Sambalpur village was among the 365 candidates appointed under the National Health Mission. The recently appointed CHO has finally achieved her mother’s dream to become a medical officer. Mahto said that her mother wanted her to become a nurse, but due to financial constraints at home, she could not pursue this profession. She further says that my mother’s dream has come true and has no complaints to god. Amir Mahto thanked the Chief Minister for allowing her to become the Community Health Officer.

“My mother’s dream has come true. I have no complaints to God. I am really happy and never thought I would be appointed as a community health officer in Jharkhand. I thank the Chief Minister for taking such an initiative.” said Amir Mahto while talking to the media

Mahto’s father is a farmer while his mother is a housewife. “They encouraged me to study. I pursued an MSc in Nursing from Sambalpur University in Odisha,” said Amir Mahto. The CHO says that she feels proud to have secured a job to live life with dignity. She also asked people to raise awareness for the third gender.

Chief Minister, Hemant Soren said, “All the newly appointed CHOs will work as an integral part of the state govt from today. They will have to play dual roles of doctor and nurse at remote locations in Jharkhand. They have big responsibilities to shoulder.”

With the appointment of Mahto, Jharkhand has become one of the few states after Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, where there is a provision for the appointment of transgenders in government departments. In September last year, the Jharkhand Cabinet approved the reservation of seats for transgenders. The state government has envisaged reservation for the third gender under the OBC quota in educational institutions and government appointments.
