IPS officer Rashmi Shukla was appointed as Maharashtra’s first female Director General of Police (DGP) this year. She took the position on January 4, 2024. Recently, she is again in the headlines as the Prime Minister mentioned about her in his speech. The PM stated that for the first time in Maharashtra, a woman DGP is leading the police and it is notable given the traditionally male-dominated nature of high-ranking police positions. Her position can be seen as a progressive step towards gender equality in the field of law application. Born in August 1965, Rashmi Shukla hails from Mumbai. She completed her graduation at Elphinstone College and completed her masters in Mumbai University.

Rashmi Shukla, a 1988-batch Indian Police Service officer, succeeds Rajneesh Seth who retired on December 31, 2024. Until her new appointment, she served as the Director General of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on deputation.

Born in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, she has deep roots in the region. At a very young age, she joined the IPS. She later married Uday Shukla, who is currently serving with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Mumbai.

Throughout her career, she held several notable positions including the Superintendent of Police for Nashik Rural, Superintendent of Aurangabad Rural, Superintendent of Satara, Superintendent of Pune Rural districts, Deputy commissioner of Police of Zone 1 and 5 in Mumbai, Additional Commissioner of police of Mumbai, Joint commissioner of crime branch in Mumbai, Commissioner of Pune Police, Additional Director General, Deputy Inspector General (Administration), Inspector General (Law and Order), Director General of Civil Defence and many more.
