Mercedes plans to go fully electric by 2030

Mercedes has announced a partnership with Stelantis to develop and manufacture battery cells that will power electric cars. Both the automotive giants have made major commitments towards going completely electric and emission free by 2030. Both will be equal partners in the Automotive Cell Company (ACC), which makes batteries for electric cars. ACC was founded by Stelantis last year.

“Mercedes-Benz is planning eight Gigafactories, with partners to install battery cell capacity of more than 200 gigawatt hours,” the German giant revealed. “On its path toward an all-electric future, Mercedes-Benz is taking an equity stake in European battery cell manufacturer Automotive Cell Company (ACC) to enhance development and production of next-generation high-performance battery cells and modules. It has been announced that in July 2021, Mercedes-Benz will be ready to go fully electric by the end of the decade – wherever market conditions allow. To reach its target, the company will have to sell 200 units by the end of the year. A total battery production capacity of more than gigawatt hours is required. Decade plans to build eight-cell factories around the world with more partners, four of them in Europe. Joining ACC in the luxury carmaker’s strategic course “Electric First” ” is the next step from “electric only,” the German giant revealed.

ACC will spend 7 billion euros to achieve 120 GWh of production capacity in Europe by the end of the decade. Mercedes has a daring ambition and ACC is currently based in France. ACC was founded last year by Stelantis and Total Energies.

“Mercedes-Benz follows a very ambitious transformation plan and this investment is a strategic milestone on our path to CO2 neutrality. With ACC, we will develop and efficiently produce battery cells and modules in Europe – Tailor-made to specific Mercedes-Benz requirements. This new partnership allows us to secure supply, take advantage of economies of scale and provide our customers with superior battery technology. On top of this we can help ensure That Europe remains at the center of the auto industry – even in an electric age: as a new partner with Mercedes-Benz, ACC aims to counter Europe’s industrial competitiveness in the design and manufacture of battery cells. We aim to more than double the capacity at our European sites to support that,” said Ola Kalenius, CEO of Daimler AG and Mercedes. .

While Mercedes hasn’t disclosed the full scope of the investment, it did reveal that it is in the mid 3-digit million euros, which is around Euro 500 million. Recently, Mercedes showcased the electric versions of the E-Class, Maybach SUV, G-Class and even the AMG EQS.
