Mercedes-Benz announced its retail sales performance for the first quarter of 2022, registering a year-on-year growth of 26 percent. Mercedes said it delivered 4,022 units in a three-month period, as against 3,193 units delivered a year ago. The carmaker also said that it ended the first quarter with its highest order bank of over 4,000 units. The company said it was able to achieve these figures despite the backdrop of global semiconductor shortages and rising input costs. The carmaker reported 35 per cent growth in its AMG and super luxury car portfolio in the first quarter of 2022.

Speaking on the company’s sales performance, Martin Schwenk, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India commented, “We are excited by our sales performance achieved in Q1 2022, which lays a strong foundation for long-term sales recovery. This achievement assumes significance in the context of continuing sharp headwinds such as semiconductor shortages, global supply chain disruptions and rising input costs. The Q1’s performance strongly reiterates the customers’ clear preference for the luxury experience offered by Mercedes-Benz and the brand’s leadership position in the Indian luxury market.

The Mercedes E-Class remained Mercedes’ most popular car in the country, while the GLC overtook the new GLA and GLC to retain the No. 1 position in the company’s SUV line-up. The carmaker also reported strong demand for the A-Class limousine and the new S-Class.

The carmaker also revealed that customers can currently expect a wait time of up to 11 months for the locally manufactured Mercedes. GLCs have the shortest waiting times between 1-2 months while GLS can take anywhere between 8-11 months. The S-Class and Maybach S 580 have a waiting time of between 3-4 and 4-5 months respectively while the A-Class limousine has a waiting period of up to 3 months. The average waiting time for GLA and GLE ranges between 4-5 months.

The Mercedes GLS has a waiting period of 11 months, the longest in its locally assembled line-up.

Schwenk was also optimistic about the brand’s performance in the next quarter and added that the company would improve production to reduce wait times.

“With the highest order bank in our history, we are confident of continuing this growth momentum in the coming months. However, due to ongoing challenges in the global supply chain, we sincerely regret the delay in delivery to our customers. Our top priority is to deliver our favorite Mercedes-Benz to our customers as quickly as possible and strive to significantly reduce waiting times, added Schwenk.
