Mercedes unveils ‘Vision EQ1000’ EV concept with 1000km range

The concept car uses less than 10 kWh of electrical energy to travel 100 km. When translated into fossil-fuel consumption, it is about 1 liter per 100 km.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the Vision EQXX, an electric concept car that it says will be capable of covering a range of 1,000 km on a single charge.

The German automaker said it plans to take the range and efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs) to a new level that will make them suitable for every trip.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kalenius said, “The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQ2 envisions the future of electric cars.”

The concept car uses less than 10 kWh of electrical energy to travel 100 km. When translated into fossil-fuel consumption, it is about 1 liter per 100 km, Mercedes noted. Tesla’s Model S 60 consumes 18.1 kWh per 100 km, which according to the company equates to about 2 liters per 100 km of fossil-fuel consumption.

The Vision EQXX’s battery pack holds approximately 100 kWh of energy, has an energy density of close to 400 Wh/l, and weighs approximately 495 kg. It has 50% less volume and is 30% lighter than the battery pack in the automaker’s EQS electric sedan.

In addition to the battery, the electrical system that powers several ancillary devices in the prototype draws additional energy from 117 solar cells on the roof. It can add up to 25km of range according to Mercedes.

The concept car was developed by Mercedes’ R&D centers in conjunction with engineers from the Formula 1 and Formula E programmes. The development process, which took approximately 18 months, included advances in the use of lightweight engineering across all elements of its electric drivetrain, resulting in a vehicle weighing approximately 1,750 kg.

The Vision eQ2’s 1,000 km range means it can be used on a single charge from Berlin to Paris. During recent testing, the automaker’s EQS 450+ electric sedan covered around 680 km on a single charge. Then there are other EVs available in the market from companies like Lucid and Tesla which have a range of 840km and 650km respectively.

Last year, Mercedes announces it will go completely electric by 2030, The carmaker said that it will have battery EVs across all segments by 2022 and from 2025 onwards, all newly launched vehicle architectures will be electric only. Additionally, it invested about $47 billion in EVs between 2022 and 2030.
