After successfully hosting a mini-gala on the theme: In America: A Lexicon of Fashion in September 2021 – the first part of a two-part exhibition exploring fashion in America, this year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute The annual fundraiser for May 2 saw the crme-da-le crme of the entertainment, fashion and arts industries come together to celebrate ‘fashion’s biggest night’.

With the second part of the theme ‘Discovering American Style in America: A Compilation of Fashion’, the dress code for the evening was ‘gilded glamour’. Held at the Met Fifth Avenue in New York, history flared up in style on the red carpet with celebrities retelling the grandeur in a series of silhouettes that tell the story of a glorious past.

Kim Kardashian walked the red carpet in a nearly 60-year-old Marilyn Monroe dress. Back in the day, Marilyn wore this outfit when she sang Happy Birthday to John F. Kennedy. To fit into this outfit, Kim shared that she had to lose 16 pounds in the span of three weeks.

Looking radiant in an Atelier Versace gown, drama unfolded when Blake Lively unveiled a copper-colored bow on her gown and unveiled a long powder blue train. She paired her outfit with a matching set of opera gloves and a dazzling tiara. Inspired by the architecture of New York City, the ensemble paid tribute to Grand Central Station and the Statue of Liberty. Describing the outfit during the live stream, Blake said: “Instead of looking at fashion to influence dress, I looked at the architecture of New York City. Blake also noted that the train draws inspiration from the constellation of Grand Central Station, the fitted dress resonates with the Empire State Building and draping, and the crown is inspired by the Statue of Liberty. The Taj has 25 stones similar to the 25 windows on the crown of the Statue of Liberty.

Alicia Keys conquered the red carpet with her New York City-inspired cape. The ornate buildings on the cape and its overall ensemble were put together by Ralph Lauren. Alicia shared that she wanted to bring New York to the gala and yes, she did! Celebrities who stunned and dazzled the red carpet with their hats and trains included Taylor Hill, Michelle Yeoh, Sabrina Carpenter, Kendall Jenner and Nicki Minaj.

Vanessa Hudgens, and Phoebe Dienevar are setting trends in sheer.

Vanessa Hudgens walked the red carpet in a black Moschino sheer tulle outfit that featured a black lace train tied at the waist. Following was the suit Bridgeton star Phoebe Dienevor embraced in a Louis Vuitton tulle ensemble featuring a peplum-inspired top with lace detailing. Other celebrities who opted for sheer on the red carpet included Louisa Jacobson in Schiaparelli Couture and Tessa Thompson in Carolina Herrera.

Katy Perry, Billy and Gemma Chan rock the red carpet and experiment with corset style silhouettes.

Taking inspiration from the corsets and bustle of the time, the red carpet had a futuristic and classic interpretation of the silhouette. Dresses from Katy Perry’s Oscar de la Renta and Gemma Chan’s Louis Vuitton shed light on the bustling design. While the red carpet saw an array of corsets shown on celebrities including Billie Eilish, Gemma Chan, Katy Perry, Sidney Sweeney and Gigi Hadid. Billie Eilish noted that the Gucci-designed ensemble was made from existing materials and was eco-friendly.

Inspired by famed model Jerry Hall’s YSL outfit, Hailey Bieber walked the red carpet in a Saint Laurent ivory gown with feathers on the cape. Feathers found their way onto many dresses on the red carpet. The stars who incorporated feathers in their exquisite outfits were Ashley Park in Prabal Gurung, Cynthia Erivo in Louis Vuitton, Chloe Kim in Giambattista Valli Couture, to name a few.
