Meta, formerly Facebook, on Thursday announced that its India chief Ajit Mohan has stepped down to pursue another opportunity.

Mr. Mohan took over as Vice President and Managing Director at Meta India in early 2019. Prior to this, he was the CEO of video-streaming platform Hotstar. Prior to Mr. Mohan, the post was vacant for almost a year after Umang Bedi stepped down.

“Ajit has decided to step down from his role at META to pursue another opportunity outside the company. Over the past four years, he has been instrumental in shaping and growing our India operations to help many millions of Indians. To serve businesses, partners and people,” Nicola Mendelssohn, Vice President, Global Business Group, Meta, said in a statement.

While Mr. Mohan is reported to have joined rival social networking platform Snap Inc., this is yet to be confirmed.

Ms. Mendelsohn further added, “We remain fully committed to India and have a strong leadership team to carry forward all our work and partnerships. We are grateful for Ajit’s leadership and contributions and wish him a bright future ahead. We wish that.

Under Mr. Mohan, META faced several controversies, including allegations that the social media network was biased in favor of the ruling Modi-led government, and even violated its hate speech policy in India. . Due to this dispute Ankhi Das, the then India Policy Head of the company also left the firm.
