Meta Quest Pro and Quest 2 VR headset prices cut: Here’s why

Last Update: March 06, 2023, 18:37 IST

Meta wants more people to get into VR

Meta plans to roll out new models over the next few years, but also wants more people to use the ecosystem.

Meta continues its journey to bring Metaverse to the mainstream segment. Its products have been priced high, but now you are seeing a change in attitude as the company struggles to stay relevant to the ecosystem. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Meta, claims the price cut is to help more people get into virtual reality (VR), which would require hardware like the Quest 2 or Quest Pro.

Meta is also planning for future Quest headsets, which means the company will need a quick turnover of existing units, and we’ve commonly seen phone brands employ this strategy to phase out older models. The decision becomes clear when you look at the huge revisions in prices for both the Quest Pro and Quest 2 VR headsets.

Quest Pro and Quest 2 VR headsets new prices

The Quest Pro VR headset now starts at $1,000 (roughly Rs. 82,700) which is a price drop of $500 (roughly Rs. 4,000). You can buy the Quest 2 VR headset for $429 (roughly Rs. 35,130), while its 256GB variant was earlier priced at $500 (roughly Rs. 4,200). The price changes are significant for Meta who is hoping that more consumers will now consider purchasing a VR headset and help the company grow its Metaverse ecosystem.

Meta is spreading its wings over the next few years, in fact it has reportedly drawn up a roadmap that includes new launches till 2027. It has some ambitious plans for its augmented reality and virtual reality gear over the next few years. Zuckerberg believes that AR glasses will soon become as common as mobile phones.

He said in a memo to his employees that Meta’s first AR glasses are ready for 2027. The company is also planning to enter the wearable segment with smartwatches. The Quest 3 is expected later this year for roughly the same price range.
