Mhambrey happy with Indian bowlers’ effort

New Zealand justified their status of World Test champions by securing very few traveling teams to bat on the last day of a Test in India. Nevertheless, India’s newly appointed bowling coach Paras Mhambrey was extremely pleased with his bowlers’ effort in the first match of the series in Kanpur.

“I think we are happy, honestly. If you look at the outcome of the game, yes, we wanted to win the Test match, we were so close. But looking at the wicket, it was not that kind of surface.” Mhambrey said on Wednesday, two days before the series-deciding start at the Wankhede Stadium.

“We knew in the morning (last day) that this is not the kind of surface where you turn and run from side to side. We knew it would be hard work. There was no bounce in particular, the ball was staying low.

“Unfortunately, a pair of edges didn’t move. Had that been the case, the result would have been something else.”

He said, “We can take a lot of positive things, especially in the effort that we put in. To be honest, I think we have made a game out of it. Taking 19 wickets on that surface was not easy. But we really I took it to the end.”

painfully small

With the first of the two Test matches being drawn, India fell far short of taking the last wicket. Whereas Mhambre is a sort of ‘Who will replace Virat Kohli at Wankhede?’ Was happy not to be a part of. In the decision-making process, he admitted that uncertainty remained due to Wriddhiman Saha’s neck sprain.

“Physios are in constant touch with head coach Rahul (Dravid) and obviously Virat (Kohli) and as we get closer to the game, we will decide and see what position he is in,” Mhambrey said.

Back-up wicketkeeper KS Bharat put on gloves on the third and fifth days after Saha injured his neck in the middle of the match.

But obviously whatever he (Saha) went through, I think the way he batted, it was a great effort.

“It was painful, we realize it but he put his hand up and (say) the team wanted it and he gave it for the team, really glad to see it.”
