Michelin receives government’s first 5-star rating for fuel efficiency

Michelin has become the first tire brand in India to receive a 5-star fuel efficiency rating as per the recently launched star labeling program by the Government of India. The company’s tires were also the first to receive a 4-star label for commercial vehicles.

As part of the new regulations set by Automotive Industry Standards (AIS), Michelin tested its third-gen Latitude Sport 3 and Pilot Sport 4 SUV tires. The new rules stipulate that from October 2022, all tires sold in India must meet critical performance and safety standards such as testing for rolling resistance and weight grip index. Therefore, all domestic and foreign manufacturers of passenger car tires have to be credited with the BEE Star label in India.

AIS claims that a 5-star rated tire consumes an average of 9.5% less fuel than the lower rated tyres. This translates to lower greenhouse gas emissions, which are a significant cause of global warming. Additionally, switching to a 5-star rated tyre will result in a reduction in Co2 emissions by an average of 750kg compared to a lower-rated tyre. As the fuel prices remain quite high in the country, these tires can help the consumers save cost by improving its overall efficiency.
