Milk shortage in Dharwad due to the bifurcation of the milk union. Hubli News – Times of India

Dharwad: The state cabinet’s decision to bifurcate the Dharwad Milk Union (DMU) by forming a separate milk union for Haveri district will lead to shortage of milk in Dharwad, Gadag and Uttara Kannada districts.
The DMUs include Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag and Uttara Kannada and a major part of the milk comes from Haveri. It is feared that the separation of Haveri from DMU and formation of a new Haveri Milk Union (HMU) will affect Dharwad badly.
The process of division will start now and HMU will start functioning from December 2022. Already work has started for setting up of Ultra High-Pressure Pasteurization (UHP) unit at Haveri at a cost of Rs.99 crore.
Established in 1984, the DMU has 12 directors and each district has three directors. With the creation of the new Haveri Milk Union, the number of directors in DMU will be reduced to nine, while Haveri will have a new chairman, three directors and one managing director with new offices and staff. It is possible that additional staff may be shifted from DMU to Haveri Milk Union.
DMU gets 2.75 lakh liters of milk every day from four districts and Haveri contributes 1.75 lakh liters of milk. One lakh liters of milk is sold daily from DMU, out of which about 10,000 liters is sold in Haveri district.
When the new Haveri Milk Union becomes operational, the DMU will face a shortage of 1.75 lakh liters of milk per day. Meanwhile, Haveri Milk Union will have to increase sales in Haveri district to remain financially viable.
DMU President Shankar Mugad said that the idea of bifurcating DMU and forming HMU is not new and work has already started. He said that the DMU would continue to get 1.75 lakh liters of milk daily till the end of December 2022.
