Mindtree co-founders donate ₹425 cr to IISc to set up multi-specialty hospital

Mindtree Limited co-founders Subroto Bagchi and NS Parthasarathy along with their spouses have donated 425 crore to Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to set up a postgraduate medical school as well as an 800-bed multi-specialty hospital.

After its inception, this will be the largest single private donation received by IISc. The name of the hospital will be Bagchi-Parthasarathy Hospital and it will carry out clinical training and research activities of the academic programme.

“The academic centerpiece of this initiative will be an integrated dual degree MD-PhD program, which aims to create a new breed of clinician-scientists, to develop new treatments and health care solutions driven by a bench-to-clinical research. Will pursue a career in bedside philosophy. They will be trained simultaneously in the hospital as well as in the science and engineering laboratories at IISc,” IISc said in a statement.

The Bagchi-Parthasarathy Hospital will be built within the existing IISc Bengaluru campus, taking advantage of co-location with science and engineering faculties and laboratories. Ground breaking is planned for June 2022 and the hospital will be operational by the end of 2024.

Bagchi Parthasarathy Hospital will have advanced facilities for diagnosis, treatment and research. The clinical and surgical departments at the hospital will provide comprehensive treatment and healthcare facilities in a range of specialties including oncology, cardiology, neurology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, urology, dermatology and plastic surgery, organ transplant, robotic surgery, ophthalmology, etc. IISc said.

In addition, students admitted to specific MD/MS and DM/MCh programs will also be trained in appropriate sections of the hospital along with their classroom and laboratory training, as per norms of the National Medical Commission. The hospital will also implement advanced digital technologies and solutions, such as integrated electronic medical records systems and a comprehensive telemedicine suite with haptics interfaces.

“His generous contribution will help us realize our vision of a seamless coupling between clinical science, basic science and engineering technology disciplines, all anchored within a vibrant university campus, providing cross-sections for young minds. enable disciplinary training and research opportunities. We are hopeful that this will create a new blueprint for institution building in India, especially in medical research,” said Professor Govindan Rangarajan, Director, IISc.
