Minister’s son accused of killing farmers in UP released on bail

Lakhimpur Kheri violence accused Ashish Mishra was released from jail on Friday

Lakhimpur Kheri (UP):

Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra was released from jail on Friday after getting interim bail from the Supreme Court in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case.

“He (Ashish Mishra) has been released from jail. We have received the release order from the sessions court,” Senior Superintendent of Kheri District Jail Vipin Kumar Mishra told PTI. The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted him interim bail for eight weeks in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence that claimed eight lives.

A bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice JK Maheshwari directed that Ashish Mishra shall not reside in Uttar Pradesh or Delhi during the interim bail period.

On October 3, 2021, eight people were killed at Tikunia in Lakhimpur Kheri district, where violence broke out when farmers were protesting the then Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to the area.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Police’s FIR, an SUV ran over four farmers, in which Ashish Mishra was sitting.

Following the incident, the driver of the SUV and two BJP workers were allegedly beaten to death by angry farmers. A journalist also died in the violence.

Ashish Mishra was arrested on October 9, 2021. He was released on bail on February 15, 2022 following a High Court order.

On April 18, 2022, the Supreme Court canceled the bail granted to Ashish Mishra by the Allahabad High Court and asked him to surrender in a week’s time.

Ashish Mishra surrendered on April 24 last year.

It remanded the bail application back to the HC for a fresh decision within three months “in a fair, impartial and unbiased manner, and keeping in view the established parameters”.

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court had rejected Ashish Mishra’s bail plea on July 26 last year. He challenged the High Court order in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra was not in Lakhimpur Kheri district on Friday.

Officials said that Ashish Mishra was brought out of the jail through the back gate amid tight security.
