Mint Explainer: Who Is Ron DeSantis, the Big Winner of the US Elections?

In the midst of a night of gloom for the Republican Party of America, there was at least one good news. It came as Ron DeSantis, 44, a rising star who crushed his Democratic rival to win a second term as governor of Florida. DeSantis is being talked about as a potential challenger to former President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination for the White House.

Who is Ron DeSantis?

DeSantis was born into a working-class Hispanic-American family in the southeastern US state of Florida. After graduating from Yale and Harvard University, he served in the United States Navy as a legal advisor. He also served for some time in Iraq. He first won elected office in the 2012 elections as a member of the House of Representatives, the US lower house. After serving for six years, DeSantis won a close battle for governor of Florida in 2018. After four years as governor, DeSantis won a crushing victory against his Democratic rival in the 2022 midterm elections. He has now emerged as a possible candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.

What is his political position?

Many see DeSantis as Trump 2.0. The comparison points to his ability to combine Trump’s talent for solidifying a conservative voter base with solid policy positions and experience in governance.

DeSantis shot to prominence for his belligerent stance towards the Biden administration. He has opposed President Biden on issues ranging from immigration and the COVID-10 pandemic to schooling policies. He is even willing to fight the dirty fight in the culture wars that engulf American society. He got national coverage when he incited asylum-seeking migrants in Martha’s Vineyard, a major liberal enclave in Massachusetts. However, his willingness to work with the federal government when a devastating hurricane struck Florida earned him praise from some sections.

Why is he seen as a good candidate for the presidency?

His success in Florida has been a significant part of his appeal. When he was elected, DeSantis edged out his Democratic rival by about half a percentage point. This echoed Florida’s long history as a swing state: In 2000, the state ruled the presidential election by a few thousand votes in favor of George W. However, DeSantis won re-election by a huge margin of 20 points. He won parts of the state that were formerly Democratic strongholds and garnered massive swathes of the vote from Hispanic-Americans, a significant minority community. After several of former President Donald Trump’s candidates lost their election bid in the recently-concluded midterm, many in the Republican Party think another Trump for the White House in 2024 should be avoided. DeSantis will be younger, more popular and have a steady hand on Tiller.

Will he be able to defeat Trump?

Despite his undeniable strength, he would lose to the former president in a one-on-one contest. Trump, while unpopular nationally, has a strong base among conservative voters in the country. As such, DeSantis will find it difficult to secure the Republican nomination.

Clearly, Trump sees the governor of Florida as a threat. Trump has already attacked DeSantis and defiantly referred to him as “Desanctimonius.” When DeSantis was asked about challenging him for the Republican nomination, Trump said cryptically: “I think if he runs, he could hurt himself very badly.”

This and other feuds in recent months have marked a deterioration in the relationship between the two men. In 2018, DeSantis had the backing of Trump when he ran for governor.

DeSantis has so far remained silent about the presidential election in 2024.
