The clash broke out after Mayor Shelley Oberoi announced a vote to elect the six-member Standing Committee (the highest decision-making body of the MCD).

The ongoing tussle between the BJP and the AAP in Delhi’s MCD reached its peak on Friday during the counting of votes for the standing committee elections when the verbal spat between the two parties turned into violence.

The clash broke out after Mayor Shelley Oberoi declared a vote for the election of the six-member Standing Committee (the highest decision-making body of the MCD) invalid. The BJP corporators protested alleging molestation and started raising slogans. As the AAP members retaliated, members from both sides soon started kicking, punching and slapping each other. Eventually the House was adjourned and re-election was announced for 27 February.

Here are the key takeaways from all of Friday’s falls:

  • Delhi Mayor Shaili Oberoi adjourned the House amid uproar and announced fresh elections for the six-member standing committee on February 27. All ballots have been torn up, she said.
  • Opposing the mayor’s order to hold the re-election on February 27, the Delhi BJP said they would approach the court against the order for the re-election.
  • Following the ruckus at the Civic Centre, members of the Aam Aadmi Party on Friday gathered at the Kamla Market police station and demanded registration of an FIR against the BJP on charges of “attempt to murder an AAP woman corporator”.
  • The Mayor alleged that the BJP created ruckus despite accepting their demands. The standing committee elections were held as per the demand of the BJP. Still, they created a ruckus and came on stage to attack me… Today is a black day. The Constitution was mocked and today the House saw a black day.
  • Blaming the attack on herself, Mayor Oberoi said, “I thank the women civil defense personnel for saving me. BJP members assaulted AAP women members. She later approached the Delhi Police Commissioner regarding her attack.” Took to Twitter to request an urgent meeting with Bite Marks. The way they attacked our Mayor, we will take legal action.’
  • The Delhi BJP alleged that the violence was instigated by AAP MLA Atishi and will reportedly file an official complaint against her with the Delhi Police. He also shared a purported video on social media in which the AAP leader was talking to the women councilors shortly before engaging in a physical scuffle and accused them of instigating them.
  • The BJP alleged that the Mayor was acting on the instructions of Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal and accused the AAP of tampering with the voting process. “Six members were to be elected to the Standing Committee. Three members each from AAP and BJP were elected. You have lost a member. All this was done to make them win and the results were tampered with.
  • BJP corporator Shika Rai alleged that the mayor declared the vote invalid after the Election Commission official left the house. After the polling, the Election Commission officials made a sheet and gave it to the mayor, but when the mayor saw that the BJP had won the seats, an AAP poll agent took out the vote and said it was invalid, she said.
  • Members resorted to violence against each other and both the AAP and the BJP blamed each other. Police personnel and marshals tried to control the situation as the councilors hit, slapped and kicked each other. One of your councilors Ashok Manu fell down. Meanwhile, BJP’s Meenakshi Sharma alleged that she was attacked with a sharp object and there were bruises on her arm.
  • Fresh elections were held on Friday morning after failing to hold on Wednesday. There was an uproar in the MCD House on Wednesday night as well and the House had to be adjourned about 15 times.
