Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine prevents hospitalizations, CDC study indicates

The COVID-19 vaccine made by Moderna Inc. is more effective at keeping people out of hospital than Pfizer Inc. and partner BioNTech SE or Johnson & Johnson, indicates new research.

In a study published Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers studied more than 3,600 adults who were hospitalized in the US between March and August 2021. He looked at people who were admitted to 21 hospitals who had at least one Covid. -19 symptoms and a positive PCR or antigen test, as well as patients who were hospitalized who tested negative for COVID-19. They then compared their vaccination status and which vaccine they received.

Researchers found that Moderna Vaccine’s effectiveness against hospitalization was 93%, compared to 88% for Pfizer-BioNtech and 71% for J&J. The effectiveness of Moderna and Pfizer-BioNtech vaccines also seemed to improve over time as compared to the J&K vaccine. Moderna Vaccine’s effectiveness against hospitalization fell to 92% after 120 days, while Pfizer-BioNtech’s fell to 77%. After just 28 days, the effectiveness of the J&J vaccine dropped to 68%.

The authors, referring to the J&J vaccine by its branded name, wrote, “These real-world data suggest that the two-dose Moderna and Pfizer-Biontech mRNA vaccine regimens provide greater protection than the single-dose Janssen viral vector vaccine regimens.” Huh.” . He said that although there are differences in vaccine effectiveness, all three vaccines provide substantial protection against hospitalization.

The Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines also produced higher post-vaccination antibody levels than the J&J vaccine, the researchers said. They looked at blood samples from 100 healthy volunteers who had been fully vaccinated within the past two to six weeks and found that those who received the Moderna vaccine were more susceptible to the virus than those who received Pfizer-BioNTech. There were high antibody levels against the receptor binding domain. Vaccine or J&J Vaccine. When it comes to antibodies directed against the virus’s spike protein, those who received either the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine had significantly higher levels than those who got the J&J vaccine.

The difference in vaccine effectiveness may be due to several factors, the scientists wrote, noting that the Moderna vaccine has a higher mRNA content than the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine. Differences in timing between doses—three weeks for Pfizer-Biontech and four weeks for Moderna—could also account for the difference, he said.

“It’s a growing story that Janssen’s experience falls short of its single-dose situation,” said Daniel Griffin, chief of infectious disease at healthcare provider network ProHealth New York, which received its second dose of Moderna Vaccine in January.

He has patients who have received the J&J vaccine ask them if they should still consider getting one of the mRNA vaccines. He tells those patients that the data is still coming out whether it will be helpful, he said.

“We’re going to get more and more people who got the Janssen vaccine, what should I do?” he said.
