Mohamed Nemil aims for more first-team action after sizzling start to Durand Cup campaign

When FC Goa signed Mohamed Nemil two years ago, it was widely regarded as an Indian Super League (ISL) club’s statement of intent. The youngster was one of the first batch of graduates from Reliance Foundation Young Champs (RFYC) who joined the program in 2015 at the age of 13.

By the time FC Goa arrived, Nemil had already made a name for himself in Indian youth football circles, and the club was lauded for having him on board as it opened its eyes to scouting upcoming talent.

Two years later, the 20-year-old has definitely made a mark in the Goa-based club. His performances, especially in the Durand Cup, inspired the sport’s followers in the country to sit down and pay attention.

In the 2021 edition of the tournament, the youngster scored four goals in six matches, including a brace against Jamshedpur FC in the group stages, helping Gaur lift the trophy for the first time. And now, as the Boys in Orange look to defend their title in the ongoing edition of the Durand Cup, Nemil is once again the center of attraction, having already scored twice in as many matches.

Although FC Goa suffered a 3–1 loss in the first match of their campaign, Nemil’s goal was the highlight of the match. His shot directed into the top-left corner of the net left the Black Panthers helpless as they conceded a shock lead.

A few days later, Mohammad Nemil’s 8th-minute strike made all the difference between Gaur and the Indian Air Force football team.

“I am happy with all the goals I have scored so far and I am looking forward to score more,” Nemil said.

“Against Mohammedan, when I saw the goalkeeper defending his near post, I realized I had a chance if I hit the far corner of the net, although I was at a distance. I’m glad that It worked, but not very happy looking at the outcome of the match.

“I am more than happy with my winner from the clash against Air Force. I had good support from my teammates, especially Lalremruta HP and Mavon Dias, who stepped up together before Maven passed the ball to take the shot. It was a team goal and the fact that it helped us win makes it more special,” he said.

Despite his impressive performance in the Durand Cup 2021 due to an injury in the lead-up to the campaign, the youngster got early chances for FC Goa in the ISL 2021-22. In 14 matches, he took only 362 minutes of action and made a total of 211 touches on the ball. The 20-year-old, however, is still impressed with a passing accuracy of 78.98%.

“Even though I was only given four starts, I am not disappointed. I have trained with many great football players, and the education I have learned from doing so has been extremely valuable. As a player who still holds his own Looking for a way, he has to find ways and means to improve his game. I am thankful to FC Goa for giving me this opportunity.’

“Once my Durand Cup 2022 campaign is over, I hope to be given more time to work with the first team ahead of the upcoming ISL season.
