Moon Knight finale: Jake Lockley’s much-anticipated entry, Layla’s grand fight, post credits scene explained

Before we get into the adrenaline rush that there was the 6th and final episode and Oscars start praising Isaac and Ethan Hawke, can we please talk about what Calamavi did? Because every time we see a female superhero delivering the right punch, it’s hard to jump in joy and shed a little tear without the makers doing anything sensual or sexist about it.

The series finale gave the actress and her character a much-deserved place to shine and showcase their potential.

The final episode ended with the death of Steven Grant in Duet and Mark Spector made his way into Reeds’ territory. The Egyptian god of Taweret tells him that he can live in peace as his scales are now balanced. But he goes back to rescue Steven and tells his frozen idol that his very existence saved him. Mark doesn’t leave Steven and almost dying with him opens the doors for Osiris, as Tavaret mentioned earlier, and he is alive again.

Before coming back to life, Arthur Harrow had already retrieved Ammit’s desperation from his dead body. With his cult, he reaches the chamber where all the other incarnations of the Egyptian gods reside and Harrow kills them all in order to free Ammit. Laila, who was following them, also frees Khonshu by breaking his habit. However, Khonshu cannot stop Ammeet without his avatar and Laila does not want to step into that shoe as she never trusted Khonshu.

Khonshu however tries to stop Ammit and Harrow from killing the Egyptians and meanwhile, Layla agrees to be the incarnation of Taweret. The goddess of fertility and childbirth gives Layla a new avatar and has designed a fabulous superhero costume for her with powerful blade-like wings, in which she delivers perfect punches to Harrow and his disciples.

By the time all this happens, Mark has resurfaced and now strikes a perfect chord with Steven. He has a conversation with Khonshu and tells him that he has to deal with both of them and once the task is done, he will free them. Mark/Steven Moon arrives in Cairo as a knight and, together with Layla, who is now the stronger of the two together, gives everything to stop Harrow. Khonshu also continued his fight with Ammit.

However, Arthur eventually overpowers both Mark and Layla and is blacked out when he is about to kill Mark. When he comes to his senses, he has already wounded Harrow, killed his men and won the battle. He’s clearly confused as to who did it because Steven didn’t take over when he blacked out.

It was a major tease for the character of Jake Lockley, Mark Spector’s third and most violent identity. In the comic books, Lockley is a cab driver and is also revealed in the mini-series during the post-credits scene.

After dominating Harrow, he seals Ammeet in his body but Mark is unwilling to kill him. Khonshu tries to reason with him that Harrow needs to be killed to ensure that Ammit never escapes and creates panic once again. However, he asks Khonshu to kill them himself. He also reminds them to free them from being their avatar Moon Knight and leaves with Layla.

Mark isn’t really free of Khonshu and that’s where the importance of the post-credits scene lies. Prior to this, Steven was not aware of his alter-ego Mark and so that particular personality never communicated with Khonshu, nor was aware of his existence. However, the same thing is repeated with Mark and Steven who are not aware of their third persona, Jake. But guess who knows all this? That’s right, Khonshu.

Although he frees Mark and Steven, Jake remains his avatar and is unknown to them. A post-credits scene shows Harrow in a mental institution. A mysterious man rescues her from there and throws her in a big luxury car and Harrow finds himself sitting opposite Khonshu. He tells Harrow how Mark believed he wanted his wife Layla to become his incarnation after Mark. Khonshu says, “Why would I ever need someone else when he has no idea how upset he really is,” and introduces Jake Lockley, who kills Harrow, finishing Khonshu’s job.

The latter’s presence, whether it was for a few seconds, proved that he would be more trouble than Mark or Steven because this alter-ego is already so violent. His presence may also extend to other MCU projects or perhaps develop into the second season of Moon Knight.

While there is no official confirmation on that front, her character and Mark’s obliviousness to her leaves the series on a rock. The sixth and final episode ended with a bang, yet and if there is a second season, it has great hopes to live up to.

Moon Night directed by Mohamed Diab is streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar.
