More countries want to make USB Type C the common charging standard for mobiles

After the European Union passed legislation to make USB Type C the standard charging port for mobile devices, other countries are planning a similar move. The US has already rolled out the idea to manufacturers in this area, and this week, we have another contender looking for a common standard for charging.

Brazil is the new country that wants to make USB Type C the default charging standard for mobile devices sold in the region. The suggestion has been made by Brazil’s wireless regulator, which is now asking the country’s people if they want similar governance in the region.

Even companies can share their views on the matter and all of them have time till August 26 to express their views.

While the European Union has sought USB Type C as the charging standard for many devices, the Brazilian body wants to make it a standard only for smartphones. The new development will put further pressure on Apple, which is the only manufacturer in the industry to continue using its Lightning connector instead of USB Type C for smartphones.

The company has already switched to iPads and Macs, but the iPhones have been left out. However, all these rules may eventually force Apple’s hand, which some reports in the past few months have suggested.

It is reported that Apple may move the iPhone to USB Type C in 2024 with the iPhone 15 series, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst who tracks Apple and regularly shares updates from the company , indicated.

We’re still a long way from making USB Type C the de facto charging standard for devices, but seeing as how countries are drafting laws in this regard, that future doesn’t seem too far off now. Either way, we’re hoping that the effort to reduce e-waste will have the right end, and Apple is finally bound with a much-anticipated move.
