Justice DY Chandrachud appointed as the 50th Chief Justice of India

President Draupadi Murmu appointed Justice DY Chandrachud as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI), Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said on October 17. Justice Chandrachud will take oath on November 9, a day after CJI Justice Uday Umesh Lalit attaining the age of 65. “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the Hon’ble President has appointed Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from November 9, 22,” said Mr. Rijiju tweeted.

Delhi Excise Policy Case: CBI interrogates Manish Sisodia for nearly nine hours

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday questioned Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the excise policy case in which he has been named as an accused along with 14 others. The agency has alleged that there were several irregularities in the excise policy, which was revised and implemented under Mr. Sisodia. The then Excise Commissioner Arva Gopi Krishna, Deputy Commissioner Anand Tiwari and Assistant Commissioner Pankaj Bhatnagar have also been charged.

415 crore Indians out of multidimensional poverty since 2005-06

During the 15-year period between 2005-06 and 2019-21, 415 million people in India were lifted out of poverty, with two-thirds in the first 10 years and one-third in the next five years. The Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) was released on Monday.

Sri Lankan writer Shehan Karunatilaka wins 2022 Booker Prize

Sri Lankan author Shehan Karunatilaka won the Booker Prize on Monday for his second novel “The Seven Moons of Mali Almeida”, about a dead war photographer on a mission to the afterlife. Mr Karunatilaka received the trophy from Queen Consort Camilla at the first individual ceremony of the English Language Literary Award since 2019. He also received a prize of £50,000 ($56,810).

President, Vice President or Minister can personally prosecute defamation: Supreme Court verdict

High constitutional functionaries, from the President of India to government ministers, need not rely on the state machinery to prosecute their defamation, the Supreme Court said in a judgment on Monday. A constitutional functionary may choose to renounce his high-ranking recognition and take on the role of a private citizen to prosecute him over harmful comments made about his public functions in office.

Fadnavis says ruling alliance won more than half of seats in Maharashtra Gram Panchayat elections

The ruling BJP on Monday claimed to be on top in the results of around 1,100 gram panchayats in 18 districts of Maharashtra. State BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that out of the results of 889 gram panchayats (out of a total of 1,165), the BJP has won 397, while the Eknath Shinde-led Eknath Shinde has won. The Shiv Sena faction has won 81 seats.

Byju’s raises $250 million in new funding round

Edtech start-up Byju’s has raised $250 million in fresh funding from existing investors. “Despite adverse macroeconomic conditions, 2022-23 is poised to be our best year ever in terms of revenue, growth and profitability,” said Byju Raveendran, Founder and CEO. Byju’s is currently in the sweet spot of his growth story, with both unit economics and economies of scale on his side, according to him.
