Francesco Bagnia dominated the 2021 Algarve Grand Prix to win the final round of the championship. The victory was Bagnia’s redemption after a crash in the previous round that handed the 2021 world title to Fabio Quartaro of Yamaha. Nevertheless, after a crash between Tec3’s Iker Lecuona and KTM’s Miguel Oliveira, Bagania’s victory allowed Ducati to win the MotoGP Constructors’ Championship, just before the race was red flagged in the final round of the race. Both the riders managed to avoid serious injuries.

The race started with Bagnia in pole position but Ryder had a slow start, which allowed his teammate Jack Miller to take the lead. Nevertheless, Bagnia was quick to reclaim the top spot in the first corner, followed by Joan Meir in second over Suzuki as she overtook Miller at the following corners. Bagnia and Mir hurried to separate themselves from the rest of the pack and were evenly matched on the opening lap.

By lap 7, Bagnia began to extend her lead over Mir and the Ducati rider slipped by eight tenths of a second. He extended that interval to more than two seconds by lap 16.

Meanwhile, Quartaro didn’t start well with the P7 either. Falling down to P8 on the opening lap, he returned to P6 when he passed Lecuona and Honda’s Pol Espargaro. However, the rider struggled with power trouble on his M1 and was soon passed by Pramac Ducati’s George Martin and then Johann Zarko. Quartaro’s run was short-lived, although he crashed on lap 21, ending the race for 2021 world champion, while also recording his first DNF of the season.

The race however saw red flags on lap 23 of 25 when Lecuona and Oliveira got into a massive collision. At the fore, Bagnia secured their third win of the season with Mir finishing second. Miller claimed third place from Alex Marquez of LCR, followed by Zarco, Pol Espargaro, Jorge Martin, Alex Rins of Suzuki, Ana Bastianini of Avintia and Brad Binder of KTM in the top 10.

LCR’s Takaki Nakagami started from the back of the grid, but Avintia’s Luca Marini and Petronas SRT’s pair of Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso moved up to 11th place. Stefan Bradl, standing in for Marc Marquez at Honda, took the final point. Maverick Vinales was the only finisher for the team on Aprilia after teammate Alex Aspargaro crashed. Yamaha’s Franco Morbidelli was the last finisher in 17th place.
