MP’s proposal to remove toxic waste from Union Carbide sent to Environment Ministry

Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Bagwant Khuba said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha that as per the decision of the Union Cabinet in 2010, the Madhya Pradesh government is responsible for the disposal of chemical waste from the Union Carbide site in Bhopal.

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has forwarded the Madhya Pradesh government’s proposal to the Environment Ministry on disposal of chemical waste lying at the erstwhile Union Carbide site in Bhopal, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Bagwant Khuba said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha that as per the decision of the Union Cabinet in 2010, the Madhya Pradesh government is responsible for the disposal of chemical waste from the Union Carbide site in Bhopal.

As per the Cabinet decision, the proposal for disposal of toxic waste has to be endorsed by the Monitoring Committee constituted under the chairmanship of the Environment Minister, before requesting the Department of Expenditure to release funds for the same.

“The proposal received from the state government of Madhya Pradesh has been forwarded to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for consideration and endorsement by the Oversight Committee,” Khuba said.

He said that the Central Government has continuously reviewed and issued instructions to the Madhya Pradesh Government to expedite the process of disposal of the erstwhile Union Carbide waste.
