Mumbai-based CA tops CAT 2021, says mantra is to be selective in attempting questions

Most of the B-school aspirants consider CAT to be one of the toughest entrance exams, however, Neel Jain from Mumbai has outperformed CAT. In an exclusive chat with News18.com, the 23-year-old said that the key is to know which questions to attempt and which ones to skip during the exam.

“The objective for CAT is not to solve everything. It is a decision making paper. A candidate can solve only 60-70 percent paper with good accuracy and stand a chance to score well. Hence on accuracy and decision making. Attention should be given and the candidate should be taken forward.”

Jain, who has also passed chartered accountancy and has an M.Com degree, says CAT is all about “quick decision making”. He claims that he has understood his strength and can take decisions during time bound exams as he has been practicing mocks for a long time. Just some time

“I attempted previous year papers, and analyzed my mistakes carefully and worked on them. I gave about two to five minutes before starting any section. I devoted this time to identifying my strong areas. I spend around 2-3 minutes in VARC and 4-5 minutes in DALR to figure out which questions I should choose.”

Jain has secured 99.98 percentile overall. He got 99.91 percentile in Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, 93.45 percentile in Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning and 95.88 percentile in Quantitative Ability.

M.Com in Business Management from HR College of Economics in Mumbai, Nileya started preparing for his exams about four months back. “I choose not to work while preparing for the exam, so every day I can devote 8-10 hours to preparation.”

“My main preparation was from TIME study material and social media platforms. I joined a few channels on social media platforms including Telegram to get article content,” he said, adding, “There are many channels on Telegram, one of them is called Article Bank where one can read article content every day. “

Asking the candidates to keep a balance between their hobbies and studies, Neel said, “At the time of my preparation, I wake up around 7 in the morning, giving 4-5 hours for my studies during the first half and one after the other. Am. Break I will invest more for a few hours in the second half. By 7 in the morning, I would have finished work and posted that I would play football with my friends and watch Formula One every day.”

Neela is currently preparing for GD, he said, adding, “To prepare for GDPI, I am reading newspaper every day and keeping an eye on the upcoming budget segment.”
