Mumbai civic body on alert with Covid positivity rate touching 6%; Calls to ramp up testing

Mumbai covid cases: Mumbai civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday warned the public as the city witnessed a spurt in Covid cases. BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal asked the municipal authorities to start the coronavirus test immediately. He also asked the staff of jumbo field hospitals to be put on alert in view of the “tremendous” rise in fresh COVID-19 cases in the city in the last few weeks. “The daily new cases (reported) in Mumbai have increased significantly, and with the monsoon, we will now see a rapid increase in symptomatic cases,” Chahal told BMC officials. The cases of Kovid-19 in the city have been increasing continuously since the beginning of May. The number of new cases reported on Tuesday has crossed the 500 mark for the first time since 6 February.

Chahal, in a message, directed BMC officials to conduct COVID-19 tests on a war footing in Mumbai, ensure adequate staff in jumbo field hospitals and put them on alert.

He also asked the civic authorities to keep the private laboratories active and fully prepared. Chahal asked all assistant municipal commissioners, in-charges of various wards, to review the status of ward wise rooms to ensure that they are fully equipped with staff, medical teams and ambulances, and also alert private hospitals. He asked the Assistant Civil Commissioners to conduct daily review of the COVID-19 situation in their wards and intervene wherever necessary.

The civic chief also directed these officers to visit the jumbo hospitals under their jurisdiction to ensure that they are equipped with de-watering pumps, structural stability certification, fire safety net, medical and paramedic staff, and oxygen.
