Indian Rail’ Central Railway(CR) Zone has set up ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai as part of its innovative idea of ​​catering policy.

The restaurant has been built using a defunct rail coach which will become a landmark dining house in the region. The restaurant on the rail is located opposite Coach Heritage Gali, Platform No. 18, CSMT. The heritage street has railway artifacts including narrow gauge locomotives, parts of an old printing press, etc. The place offers ample space apart from easy connectivity to the suburbs via freeways.

The restaurant will be a fine dining venue providing a unique experience for the diners and will accommodate 40 persons with 10 tables inside the coach. The interior of the restaurant is decorated in such a way that the passengers as well as the public can enjoy the experience of dining in a rail-themed setting.

The rates and menu of the restaurant shall be decided by the licensee as per the market rates approved by the Railways.

The license period is for one year and can be extended based on performance. The licensee shall also be responsible for maintaining the approach corridor at his own cost.

The Food Adulteration Act and other statutory laws are to be complied with by the licensee. Keeping the safety aspect in mind, portable fire extinguishers have been installed with the staff versed in the operation of the equipment.

The restaurant will function by following all the extant Covid-19 guidelines for restaurants by the government.

Anil Kumar Lahoti, General Manager, Central Railway today inspected “Restaurant on Wheels” at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai. BK Dadabhai, AGM, Mr Manoj Sharma, CAO (C), Gopal Chandra, PCEE, Mukul Jain, PCOM, Manijit Singh, PCCM, SK Pankaj, SDGM, Mr Alok Singh, PCSO, AK Srivastava, PCSTE, Mr RL Rana, IS PCMM, Shalabh Goyal, DRM-BB and other senior officers were present on the occasion.

Railways plans to explore the possibility of opening similar restaurants at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Kalyan, Neral, Lonavala and Igatpuri in Mumbai division. Tenders have been awarded at five other locations on Central Railway namely Nagpur, Akurdi, Baramati, Chinchwad and Miraj stations.
