Mumbai: Maharashtra on Tuesday reported a 75-day high in new Covid infections with 2,172 cases. Mumbai, which has been driving a massive boom, saw its highest daily detection (1,333) in seven months. The silver lining was the state’s low number of Covid deaths -22 and Mumbai one. The state did not detect any new Omicron infections on Tuesday, limiting the new version’s cumulative count to 167.
The exponential rise in cases pushed Mumbai’s daily positivity rate (PR) to 4%, a seven-fold increase from the PR on December 1. The city had not had such a high positivity rate since May, when the second wave started receding. The city’s daily positivity dipped below 5% at the end of January, before starting to rise again from February and reaching an average of 20% in March and April.

On Tuesday, the state witnessed a continuous jump for the seventh day with the addition of 2,172 cases. The state’s Covid tally has reached 66,61,486. Around 61% of the cases came from Mumbai, which has been witnessing an increase for almost a week. Monday was the exception when there was a slight drop due to less testing. A weekly comparison shows that from 1,300 cases reported in the first week of December, the number jumped to around 1,500 in the second week and around 1,900 in the third week. But between December 22 and 28, the newly detected cases touched 5,478, a 320% increase from the week before. Mumbai’s cumulative Covid-19 tally has reached 7,73,031.
The city’s Tuesday’s surge is the highest since May 26, when 1,352 cases were reported, while the state’s tally was the highest since October 14 (2,384).
health minister Rajesh Tope Said that the state is cautious about the Omron graph. “The doubling rate of the variant is very high, and it is anticipated that cases may increase significantly in January and February,” Tope said. Out of 167 omicron cases, 91 have been discharged. Senior officials said that till now there has been an increase of 50-55% cases in Mumbai. The state’s positivity rate is also rising – touching 1.08% after being consistently below 1% for weeks.

SevenHills Hospital in Andheri, which is a dedicated COVID-19 facility, saw 76 admissions on Tuesday, including 22 international passengers admitted on suspicion of Omicron. Dean Dr Balkrishna Adsul said this is almost four times higher than last week. “However, there have been no new admissions to the ICU, although severe cases start coming in around 2-3 weeks after the spike in cases,” he said.
