Mumbai rains: IMD issues red alert for financial city, Thane and Palghar

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on 7 July issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for 8 July amid heavy rains in the financial capital for the fourth consecutive day.

The new IMD alert also indicates heavy rainfall at some places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. In the last 24 hours, South Mumbai received 82 mm, Santacruz 1051.1 mm and Colaba 953.2 mm, while the eastern and western suburbs received 109 mm and 106 mm of rain.

The IMD had issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on July 7. Mumbai’s Powai Lake has been in spate since last evening amid heavy rains for the past few days.

Due to favorable monsoon conditions, Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan region have received good rains in the last 3-4 days. “It will remain like this for the next 4-5 days,” said Jayant Sarkar of IMD Mumbai. Western and Central Railway has announced delay in running of long distance trains.

Earlier in the day, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation cited an alert for Mumbaikars to stay off the coast as the high tide would cross 3.75 meters at 5:31 pm.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that 3,500 people have been evacuated from the flood-affected areas.

With incessant rains lashing the city and paralyzing the city’s traffic, the Maharashtra government asked the authorities to remain alert and take steps to avoid loss of life and property in the metropolis and other rain-affected areas of the state. Also, issues of waterlogging, landslides and damage to houses have been reported from different parts of the state.
