Muslim community leaders visit temple near Coimbatore blast site

Coimbatore:

Muslim Jamaat leaders visited the car cylinder blast site near Sangameshwara temple in Coimbatore on Thursday and held discussions with the temple priests.

Tension prevailed in the area after the blast, in which one person was burnt to death. Tamil Nadu Police has so far arrested six people in this case and invoked the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Those arrested are known to be an aide of Jamisha Mubeen, who was burnt to death after an LPG cylinder exploded inside the car near a temple near a temple on 23 October.

“We have been living in this area for the last 200 years, and it is surrounded by Kottaimedu mosques, temples and churches. We live in a friendly way together and we will not give space to anyone to create division with us and You all know the incident happened here. We strongly condemn this act in this area and we had decided to create communal harmony in this area. With this today we Sunnat Jamaat leader came here to meet the officials of Sangameshwar temple ,” said Inayatullah general secretary Sunnat Jamaat.

He said the people involved in the blast did not belong to any Jamaat. “Today we met the temple administration and inquired about the situation and we live in Coimbatore region for peace and tranquility,” he said.

He further said that there is a situation of political panic against minorities not only in Coimbatore but across the country.

“We urge the political leaders to create communal harmony and peace in the country and they should come forward to create peace in this country,” he said.

According to the police, 25-year-old Mubeen, who was an engineering graduate, was earlier questioned by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2019 for alleged terror links. He is named as the main accused in the case.

Among the five arrested on Monday (October 24) night were Mohammad Thalka, 25, Mohammad Asruddin, 25, Muhammad Riaz, 27, Firoz Ismail, 27 and Mohammad Nawaz Ismail, 27. The sixth person was identified as Afsar Khan. Mubeen was arrested on 27 October.

Tamil Nadu Police has handed over the documents of the case to the NIA.
