MV Ganga Vilas cruise ship to leave Kolkata for Sundarbans on Monday

The MV Ganga Vilas vessel has halted at Kolkata jetty and will leave for the memorial Sundarbans on Monday. An officer gave this information. It is believed to be the longest river ship vessel in the world.

Officials said the cruise ship was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 13 and earlier this week it entered West Bengal via Murshidabad and later reached Kolkata. The vessel is anchored at the Indenture Memorial (IM) jetty on the banks of the Hooghly River.

“The ship will leave Kolkata on Monday and then stop at Sundarbans, one of the world’s largest mangrove ecoregions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site,” officials said.

Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Twitter, ‘The next leg of the journey of MV Gangavilas will be on the India-Bangladesh protocol route, it will pass through Bangladesh to reach Assam. All the facilities for the passengers have been done at the vast IM jetty itself, as a part of the sharing process.

MV Ganga Vilas had started its journey on January 13 from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and will reach Dibrugarh in Assam via Bangladesh after traveling about 3,200 km in 51 days. It will pass through 27 river channels in India and neighboring countries.

Khula, who is on the maiden voyage of the cruise, visited Kumari, an idol building center in Kolkata on Saturday. “A city tour was planned for the passengers so that they could experience the local culture,” officials said.
