MWC 2022: Biggest tech event with face recognition, QR codes for contactless access

After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mobile World Congress is back as a physical event. While there haven’t been many major tech launches this year as most of the giants like Google, Facebook, Samsung, Qualcomm, Nokia, Ericsson have opted for virtual presence, there is still buzz in Barcelona’s Fira Gran Via with physical booths. Prominent among these are tech brands.

In order to make the event as ‘safe’ as possible for visitors from almost all continents, the GSMA has incorporated a number of first-of-its-kind procedures to make the event ‘contactless’. Dori for access on the MWC show floor has been replaced with the mandatory MWC app which takes care of the entire registration. The app generates a QR code which needs to be scanned by the organizers to provide access to the booths and venue.

Before coming to MWC 2022, the GSMA has made it mandatory for visitors to upload their Vaccine or Recovery Certificates on its website during registration and only after these certificates are verified.

To gain access to the main show area, the GSMA has added face recognition cameras that scan the visitor remotely to allow access. Facial recognition entry is optional, but has simplified event entry, eliminating long queues. Before arriving at the event, visitors had the option to enroll for the face recognition feature on the website.

For participants and exhibitors, the entire badge printing process has also been made contactless. The printing process is also automated, with the badge details already received after the visitor scans their QR code. To add to this, the GSMA has made it mandatory for all attendees to wear a proper N95 mask at the event as well as have enough people to keep an eye on it. The mandatory mask rule is interesting because the wearing of masks is not mandatory in Barcelona and a lot of people outside the venue usually skip masks altogether.

GSMA claims that there are over 1500 exhibitors at MWC 2022. For the first time at MWC, live Universal Sign Language Interpretation (SLI) will be provided on all keynotes. Around 60,000 people are expected to attend this year’s MWC.
