Myanmar jails Suu Kyi’s aides on treason charges

A Myanmar court on Thursday sentenced two close aides of ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to two years in prison for treason.

The sentencing in a special court inside Yangon’s Insen Prison is the latest setback in military officials’ legal campaign against Ms Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD).

The country has been in turmoil since February 1, when generals overthrew Ms. Suu Kyi’s civilian government. Two members of the NLD’s central committee – economic advisers Han Thar Myint and Thein Oo – were sentenced on Thursday to two years in prison, a legal source said.
