Mysore University orders on girls’ movement amid outrage over gangrape

The circular has been issued “on the verbal instructions of the police department”, the university said.

Bangalore:

Days after a girl student was gang-raped in Mysore, the University of Mysore has issued a circular barring girl students from going to its Mansangotri campus after 6.30 pm. A similar order has been placed barring their entry into the Kukkarahalli lake complex after 6.30 pm.

The circular has been issued “on the verbal instructions of the police department”, the university said, adding additional security personnel will patrol the campus every day between 6 pm and 9 pm.

The circular and its “cautions” come on the heels of a shocking remark by Karnataka Home Minister Araga Gyanendra, who declared the student and his friend “(should not go to the crime scene)… it is a deserted place.. “

“Around 7-7.30 in the evening (on Tuesday), they (the student and his friend) had gone there… It’s a deserted place. They shouldn’t have gone but we can’t stop anyone from going… it It’s a secluded place and nobody usually goes there because there won’t be anyone,” the minister told the press.

Worse yet, the minister compared the opposition Congress’ protest against his horrific remark to an act of rape; He called it “an inhuman act”.

He said, “… Congress was trying to rape me.. They are trying to rape the Home Minister. They are trying to gain political mileage. This is an inhuman act.”

The minister’s words triggered a fierce protest and he got a reprimand from the chief minister.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said, “I do not agree with the comments made by my home minister regarding the gang rape incident…” I have directed the officials to take the matter seriously and update me. development.”

Later, the home minister withdrew his “rape” remark following the chief minister’s directive.

Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar also attacked the minister for using the word “rape” too lightly and then in a mild blow, said, “… He seems to like that word.” ‘

“Home Minister… you have the responsibility to protect the state. Aren’t you ashamed to make such shoddy remarks?” Mr Shivakumar said in response to the remark “shouldn’t have gone there”.

Four days after the gruesome attack on the 22-year-old MBA student and her friend, and anger against the state government, police are yet to record a statement.

Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood said this morning that five people have been arrested in connection with the case. He said the sixth accused is absconding and the police are on the lookout for him.

The home minister told reporters that the girl, who hails from Maharashtra, was in shock and the police were trying to trace the accused.

The woman had gone to Chamundi Hills on the outskirts of Mysore with her classmate at 7.30 pm on Tuesday. Every day, hundreds of people visit the site, which also houses a temple.

A group of men allegedly drinking alcohol saw the couple going into the woods and chased them.

The horrors that followed got both the students admitted to the hospital about six hours later.

According to the police, six people surrounded the couple and demanded money.

On refusing, the men beat up the woman’s lover. The woman was allegedly raped by two men, injuring her grievously.
