‘Namaste, promote adab’: Tejashwi Yadav to RJD ministers in Bihar cabinet

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday officially released a list of instructions that RJD ministers in the cabinet are expected to follow. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday expanded his new cabinet by inducting 31 new ministers, including a mammoth 16 from key ally RJD.

Tejashwi Yadav took charge deputy chief minister Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) resigned as the chief minister of the NDA alliance and joined hands with the opposition parties to form a ‘Mahagathbandhan’. The ‘Mahagathbandhan’, consisting of RJD, JD(U), Congress and Left parties. Leftists are supporting the government from outside.

On Saturday, 20 August, Yadav officially made six requests to his ministers in the cabinet. Yadav took to Facebook to announce the in-house order. During his request he emphasized on transparency and promotion of exchange of books and pens instead of flowers and bouquets.

Here is the list of requests for the Deputy CM of Bihar:

Ministers made from the quota of Rashtriya Janata Dal have been instructed not to buy any new vehicle for themselves.

,Rashtriya Janata Dal Ministers have also been asked not to allow workers, well-wishers, supporters or any other person bigger than themselves to touch their feet. RJD ministers have been asked to promote the tradition of Pranam, Namaste and Adab with folded hands for courtesy and greeting.

The RJD leader further requested his ministers to promote honesty, transparency, promptness and speedy implementation in all departmental works under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

He also encouraged ministers to exchange pens or books instead of gifting them bouquets.

,Yadav He asked all the ministers to publicize all the development works of the Chief Minister, the government and their departments on social media so that “public can get positive information about your every initiative”.

He also requested the ministers to be humble and polite with everyone and help the poor and needy people irrespective of their caste and religion on priority basis.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had cited the heinous crimes in Bihar to advance its ‘jungle raj’ claim of the newly formed grand alliance, or grand alliance. Yadav’s instructions to his party members in the cabinet seem like a quip on the allegation of ‘jungle raj’. Notably, Nitish Kumar had successfully used the term even during his election campaign, when the RJD was opposing him.

However, JD(U) president Lalan Singh rubbished the allegations and said the BJP’s allegations on the law and order situation were nothing but “widow vilap” (widow’s cry) after losing power in the state.

“If there are some sporadic incidents, it is not a reflection on the overall law and order situation. Under Nitish Kumar-led government, there is rule of law in Bihar and will remain so. After losing power, no one can follow their (BJP’s). ) is not one to hear lamentation,” he said.

The Mahagathbandhan or the Grand Alliance, which formed the government in Bihar with Nitish Kumar as the chief minister, has a combined strength of 163 in the cabinet. This increased to 164 after independent MLA Sumit Kumar Singh extended his support to Nitish Kumar. Therefore, there is every possibility of the new government proving its majority in the Bihar Assembly on August 24.
