The trademark for the name ‘Twiner’ was filed in May 2020, while approval came in January 2022

Speculation suggests that the name Twiner may be used by Bajaj Auto for a new twin-cylinder motorcycle. Yes, the company can enter the performance space and a twin-cylinder engine could be the way to go. These speculations also have merit, considering that KTM is developing a new 490 cc parallel-twin engine, which will be positioned over the current 373 cc mill of the 390 family. This engine is likely to be manufactured in India and will be exported overseas for a new line-up that will include the 490 Duke, RC 490, 490 Adventure and 490 Supermoto/Enduro.

As a Bajaj-KTM partnership, the former may be looking to localize the engine to suit the needs of its own customer base which largely includes India and other emerging markets. Note that Bajaj has a stronghold in several markets overseas, including Africa and Latin America. A more accessible and easy-to-use parallel-twin will find an audience overseas as well. Royal Enfield has managed to break that formula, so why not another domestic manufacturer.

Could the Twiner Caliber be a new premium commuter along the lines of the Boxer and Avenger?

There is also a possibility that Bajaj may use this name for a new commuter that could sport dual identities. Travelers with quirky names are not at all unusual for a bike maker and the Bajaj Twiner sits well with its previous offerings including Tag Caliber, Boxer, Avenger and the likes. Could this be a scrambler style offering? This would be an interesting proposition.

That being said, manufacturers applying for trademarks for names are not new. Bajaj already has several name trademarks including Fluor, Fluor and Neuron. Either these products are currently under development or the company wishes to keep its options open while preserving the rights to these names. Tweener could be part of a similar strategy for future products.
