Nani as a social reformer in Rahul Sankrityan’s ‘Shyam Singha Roy’

The teaser of ‘Shyam Singh Roy’ directed by Rahul Sankrityan and starring Nani, Sai Pallavi, Kriti Shetty, Madonna Sebastian and Rahul Raveendran hints at a period drama

Director Rahul Sankrityan’s teaser Shyam Singha Roy (SSR)Nani, starring Sai Pallavi, Kriti Shetty, Madonna Sebastian and Rahul Raveendran, unveiled on Thursday morning, hints at a period drama set in Kolkata. The film is scheduled to release on December 24 in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.

The teaser gives a glimpse of the story written by Satyadev Jung. A voiceover describes the plight of women who are forced and exploited in the Devadasi tradition. Nani plays the title role of a Bengali writer who challenges exploitation and works towards social reforms. The teaser also shows Nani’s other character, Vasu, romancing Kriti Shetty, and Sai Pallavi dancing in a temple as ferocious as Goddess Kali.

Rahul Sankrityan had previously directed taxi wala (2014). SSR Produced by Venkat Boyanapalli of Niharika Entertainments. The project is high on visual effects, has cinematography by Shanu John Varghese, music by Mickey J Meyer, production design by Avinash Kolla, editing by Naveen Nooli.

In a media interaction after the unveiling of the teaser, Nani revealed that Shyam Singh Roy’s character is born to a Telugu mother and Bengali father, and that the film is essentially a love story.

The film marks the second collaboration between Sai Pallavi and Nani, followed by middle class abbey (2017), and also stars Murali Sharma, Abhinav Gomatam, Jisshu Sen Gupta, Leela Samson, Manish Wadwa and Barun Chanda. Much of Kolkata was shot on an elaborate set in Hyderabad earlier this year.

The team has intensified its promotions in view of the tight race at the box office. From mid-December, several big budget Telugu films are ready for release, starting with Pushpa – Uday Directed by Sukumar and starring Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna. Sports drama will also release on December 24 gunny, Directed by Kiran Korrapati and Starring Varun Tej.
