The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the National Anti-Doping Bill to provide a statutory framework in the form of legislation to ban doping in sports in the country.

already, National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) Anti-doping measures are being taken in accordance with the norms of the World Anti-Doping Agency. It was felt that the legislative powers would confer power to prevent doping.

Passing of the Bill, which was introduced by Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur in December Last year, with competent and independent personnel, the sport would help establish a National Anti-Doping Board.

Among other things, the bill seeks to achieve timely justice to athletes, in addition to increasing cooperation between agencies in fighting doping.

It is also an attempt to reinforce India’s commitment to meet its international obligations for clean sports.

More than anything, the bill will help establish a strong, independent mechanism for anti-doping decisions.

The Bill will also give legal recognition to the functioning of NADA and the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL).

This is expected to set up more dope testing laboratories in the country.

It was also felt that this law would help in academic research and manufacturing of anti-doping related items.
