National Doctor’s Day 2022
India celebrates National Doctor’s Day on 1 July to express gratitude for their dedicated service to the medical staff. It is the birth anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, an eminent physician, educationist, freedom fighter and politician. Doctors play an important role in our society. The day holds a special significance as doctors and doctors are working round the clock to help the country fight various health crises and deadly diseases. National Doctors Day, first celebrated in the year 1991, recognizes the contribution of doctors and medical staff, who selflessly helped us in our time of need and worked tirelessly for our health.
National Doctor’s Day 2022: Theme
The theme of this year’s National Doctor’s Day celebration in India is “Family Doctors on the Front Line”. The theme highlights the contribution of doctors to their service and devotion to humanity.
Why is National Doctor’s Day celebrated on 1st July only?
July 1 marks the birth anniversary as well as the death anniversary of one of India’s most famous physicians, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was also the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. He received the country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961 and hence this day is celebrated to honor the personality.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered Dr BC Roy while talking about Doctor’s Day in Mann Ki Baat on Sunday. PM Modi said, “On July 1, we will celebrate National Doctors Day. We must pay tribute to our doctors who ensured that India does not succumb to the challenges posed by COVID-19.”
National Doctor’s Day 2022: History and Significance
The Government of India established Doctor’s Day in 1991 to recognize the contributions of BC Roy. He was instrumental in the establishment of medical institutions like Jadavpur TB Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Victoria Institution (college), Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital and Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children. He was also the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948 until his death in 1962.
This day is celebrated not only in India but in different countries on different dates.
