Gandhinagar: Tamil Nadu pole vaulter Rosie Meena Paulraj proved to be an unexpected star of athletics competition. National sport He broke a national record on his way to a gold medal here on Saturday.
Rosie, 24, covered a distance of 4.20m to surpass VS Surekha’s earlier national mark of 4.15m in 2014.
Her two Tamil Nadu teammates, Pavitra Vengetesh and Baranika Elangovan were second and third with efforts of 4m and 3.90m respectively.

Sreeshankar, who won a silver medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in August and holds a national record of 8.36m, clocked a best jump of 7.93m, which he achieved in his first attempt. He made another jump of 7.55m before passing all the remaining four attempts.
Another top long jumper, Mohd Anees Yahia The Kerala team finished third with a best jump of 7.92m.
During this, amlan borgohain Assam’s and Andhra Pradesh’s Jyoti Yaraji emerged as the fastest men and women respectively in the National Games after winning gold medals in the 100m dash events.
Jyoti, whose pet event is the 100m hurdles in which she holds the national record, stunned Dutee Chand (Odisha) and Hima Das (Assam) to win the women’s 100m gold with a timing of 11.51 seconds.
Tamil Nadu’s Archana Susindran (11.55 sec) and Maharashtra’s Diandra Valladares (11.62 sec) won the silver and bronze medals respectively.
National record holder Dutee finished sixth with a time of 11.69s while Hima finished seventh with a time of 11.74s.
Jyoti said, “I didn’t come here thinking about winning or losing. I just wanted to have a good time and that helped me to be my fastest.”
“They (Dutee and Hima) have always encouraged me and I thank them for their support. I am just happy that I won and I don’t think I beat them,” she said.
Borgohain topped the podium with a timing of 10.38 seconds in the men’s 100 meters. Tamil Nadu runners Elakiadasan VK (10.44) and Shiva Kumar B (10.48) finished second and third respectively.
“You know, it’s like a stage show, sometimes you perform, sometimes you don’t,” Borgohain said.
When asked about the hot conditions during the race, he said, “I don’t think about it much. It’s the same for everyone, right?
“In the All India Railway competition, I ran at 2 pm in similar weather conditions and took 10.25 seconds. Hence, I am experienced in such weather.”
Borgohain also took the opportunity to highlight the sacrifices made by his family to help him pursue a career in athletics.
“You see it,” he said, pointing to his arm, which he had tattooed ‘Mama’ on.
He said, “I was in Orissa and was thinking about my mother and just went and marked it on myself.”
