The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a notification advising all medical institutions and hospitals to use Khadi products. The purpose of this decision is to encourage the use of Khadi in India. India and provide employment opportunities to the rural community producing Khadi.
In an advisory published by the NMC on its official website, the commission wrote, “It has been scientifically proven that the products made from Khadi are not only beneficial for health, but are also environment-friendly. Since doctors have to wear white coats while on duty, they are advised to use coats made of khadi,” the advisory also highlighted the financial implications of encouraging the use of khadi for the Khadi and Village Industries Commission.
An official told Live Mint that Home Minister Amit Shah had written to the Health Minister to increase the use of Khadi products among medical professionals. Talking about the low consumption of Khadi in the medical sector, the official further said, “Over the years, some hospitals in Delhi have procured Khadi products for their own use. In FY 20-21, Khadi products worth around Rs 70.03 lakh were procured, while in FY 21-22 hospitals bought around Rs. 86.63 lakhs. The consumption of Khadi products in the healthcare sector is quite low if we compare it with a large number of medical institutions across the country.”
Advisory issued by Dr. Aruna V.Vanikar, President, Undergraduate Medical education The Board of the National Medical Commission also talks about employment opportunities for lakhs of rural people by increasing the use of Khadi products in medical institutions. Asking hospitals to encourage ‘self-reliant manufacturing’, the advisory has asked every hospital, nursing home, institute and other medical service providers to wear Khadi coats and aprons.
