Medical education regulator National Medical Commission (NMC) has recommended that ‘Maharishi Charak Oath’ should Replacing the Hippocratic Oath In a new curriculum for MBBS courses in the country and the students who are pursuing them.

As per the new guidelines, “The amended ‘Maharishi Charak Oath’ is recommended by When a candidate is introduced to medical education.”

The guidelines also recommend a 10-day yoga “Foundation Course”, which begins on June 12 every year and ends on June 21, International Yoga Day.

“It is recommended to start yoga training during the Foundation Course, [one hour, preferably in the morning in orientation week], Yoga practice will be for a maximum of one hour every day during a period of 10 days commencing from June 12 every year, culminating on the International Day of Yoga, i.e. June 21, observed in all medical schools across the country,” the amended according to the guidelines.

As per the guidelines, there is a need for a strong continuous initial and internal assessment to ensure competence and thus a competent medical graduate.

“If required, we may have two internal assessments and the third internal assessment may be calculated from various unitary and continuous tests carried out throughout the year,” it said.

Interestingly, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had recently said in Parliament that the ‘Maharishi Charak Oath’ would be optional and medical students would not be coerced.

The Hippocratic Oath, the ethical code attributed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, has been a widely adopted guideline for conducting the medical profession throughout the ages and is still used in the graduation ceremonies of many medical schools.
