National Service Scheme Day 2021: History, Significance, Inspirational Quotes and Motto of NSS

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports oversees the National Service Scheme, a public service programme. India celebrates National Service Scheme Day (NSS Day) every year on 24 September. During Mahatma Gandhi’s centenary year (1969), on 24 September, the National Service Scheme (NSS) was inaugurated, involving 40,000 student volunteers from 37 institutions.

The scheme is being expanded to 16,659 educational institutions as of March 2018 with over 3.8 million student volunteers spread across 198 universities and 41 (+2) councils.

History and Significance

After independence, the University Grants Commission (UGC) led by S Radhakrishnan advocated the implementation of voluntary national service in educational institutions. The government in 1952 stressed the need for Indian students to perform social and labor duties for one year.

In a letter to all chief ministers in 1958, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru examined the concept of social work as a requirement for graduation. He also directed the education ministry to develop an efficient plan.

The NSS insignia is inspired by the huge chariot wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple. The wheel represents the journey of life in time and space. The eight sticks of the wheel represent 24 hours of the day. The red color indicates that the volunteer is full of youthful blood who is lively, active, enthusiastic and enthusiastic. The dark blue color represents the universe, of which the NSS is a small part.

The motto of the NSS “Not Me But You” represents the spirit of democratic living and emphasizes the need for selfless service. NSS teaches students to appreciate other people’s point of view and to be considerate towards other beings. The ideology of the NSS is perfectly exemplified in this slogan, which emphasizes the concept that the welfare of all is highly dependent on the welfare of the society.
