Navjot Singh Sidhu taken to Patiala Hospital for medical check-up after 2 nights in jail

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who has been sentenced to one year in a road rage case, was on Monday brought to the Rajindra Hospital in Patiala for a medical checkup.

The 58-year-old former cricketer surrendered before a court here on Friday and was later sent to Patiala Central Jail. He was sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court in the 1988 road rage case. Since Sidhu will have to undergo rigorous imprisonment, he will also have to serve in jail.

According to reports, Sidhu has been kept in barrack number 10 in the Central Jail here and did not have dinner on the first night in the jail. The leader has been kept in the barracks along with four other prisoners, and the former state Congress chief’s prisoner number is 1,37,683.

Another high-profile prisoner jailed here in a drug case is Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who contested against Sidhu from Amritsar East. Both Sidhu and Majithia lost the election to AAP’s Jeevan Jyot Kaur. The Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced Sidhu to one-year rigorous imprisonment in a 34-year-old case, saying any undue sympathy in awarding an inadequate sentence would further damage the justice system and undermine public confidence in the effectiveness of the law. Will do 65-year-old Gurnam Singh was killed in the incident.

When reporters sought Sidhu’s reaction on the verdict on Thursday, he declined to comment. However, he later tweeted saying that he would “present the glory of the law”. Though the apex court had in May 2018 convicted Sidhu of the offense of “voluntarily causing hurt” to the person, it had sentenced him to jail and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000.

Gurnam Singh’s family had demanded a review of the verdict, which was allowed by the SC. Sidhu, a former BJP MP, had joined the Congress ahead of the 2017 assembly elections.

Sidhu made his political debut in 2004, contesting the Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket from Amritsar, where he shifted his base from Patiala. He defeated Congress veteran RL Bhatia. The former cricketer’s relations with the Badal family soured, even though the Shiromani Akali Dal was an ally of the BJP at that time. And then he had a problem with the BJP after the party fielded Arun Jaitley from Amritsar in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Though he was later included in the Rajya Sabha, the temperamental politician left the party to join the Congress.
