The submarine was launched from Kanhoji Angre Wet Basin of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in November 2020. After commissioning, the submarine will be named Vagir.

According to news agency ANI, despite the COVID pandemic, MDL has ‘delivered’ two submarines of Project – 75 in the year 2021 and commencement of sea trials of the fifth submarine is an important milestone.

The submarine will now undergo intensive tests of all its systems at sea, including propulsion systems, weapons and sensors. According to the report of news agency IANS, after the completion of these tests, it is to be delivered to the Navy this year.

The Scorpene class submarines are being built in India by MDL in collaboration with Naval Group, formerly DCNS, France. Scorpene submarines are extremely powerful platforms, have advanced stealth characteristics and are equipped with long-range guided torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles. These submarines have a state-of-the-art sonar and sensor suite that allows for excellent operational capabilities.

Last year, INS Vela, the fourth submarine in a series of six Project-75 submarines, was inducted into the Navy.
